The Autonomous Residency: Lauren Heckler

From 5th – 15th September 2023 studioMADE is pleased to introduce artist Lauren Heckler as the inaugural Autonomous Residency holder at the gallery. Working in partnership with Disability Arts Cymru, the lead organisation for disability arts in Wales, we developed an open call for one artist working in any media who identifies as either Deaf, disabled and/or neurodivergent to work with us on a self directed residency.

Working with a hybrid approach (both online and in the gallery itself) over two weeks Lauren will be asking questions such as “what is my relationship with nature now that I live artificially? And, does my body’s Bluetooth connection with my phone twin me with my speaker?”. These are questions Lauren has begun asking herself since being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in December 2021.

The residency will culminate with a public sharing by Lauren on Friday 15th September 2023 from 5pm until 7pm at studioMADE coinciding with Cadw Open Doors, where Lauren will engage attendees with the experiences of being a Type 1 Diabetic.

Lauren is keen to hear of experiences from anyone who is diabetic.  Should you wish to contribute to Laurens work as part of this exciting residency then do please send us an email at hecklerlauren@gmail.com for further details of how you may get involved.

Lauren Heckler (b.1992) is an interdisciplinary artist from Cymru working across performance, lens based media and sculptural intervention. Her work is shaped by social relations, field research, and a process that dreams through chains of association. She is currently developing things that go beep in the night, a research project and body of work reflecting on her lived experience of chronic illness.

Alongside her personal practice Lauren is an avid collaborator. She creates projects as Site Sit with artist Sophie Lindsey, currently they are making an alternative stone circle for a housing development in Cowbridge. In 2021-22 she worked with artist and drummer Alex Paveley to generate community co-created artworks for the National Trust commission, Climate Change: Creative Conversations. She is part of SUII Collective, a feminist group of 11 artists who offer each other positive pressure towards making and is also collaborating with Pakistani artist Shanzay Subzwari, as part of the British Council funded research project Llif / Flow facilitated by Mission Gallery.

Lauren graduated in BA Fine Art: Critical Practice from the University of Brighton in 2014, is a soon to be qualified FAVE teacher, and will be pursuing a Masters in Screendance at London Contemporary Dance School in 2024.

Ac, a yw cysylltiad Bluetooth fy nghorff â fy ffôn yn fy mharu â fy seinyddion?”. Mae’r rhain yn gwestiynau y mae Lauren wedi dechrau eu gofyn iddi hi ei hun ers cael diagnosis o Diabetes Math 1 ym mis Rhagfyr 2021.
